Several distinct kinds of cost tend to be involved. There is direct spending on food, drink, and supplies. There is the cost of the space itself, whether that means rent, a venue fee, or the wear and inconvenience absorbed by a host's home. There is time, which is rarely counted but frequently the largest contribution. And there is emotional labour: planning, coordinating, mediating, and cleaning up afterwards. Discussions of affordability that consider only the first of these often miss where the real burden sits.
