Each format carries different expectations. In a small closed group, arrival times and shared costs are usually settled in advance. In an open meetup, the person who posted the invitation may or may not consider themselves a host. In an ambient gathering, there is no host at all, and treating one participant as though they were responsible for the day can create friction that nobody intended.
