Several barriers recur across gatherings. Shared history is one: conversations built on references, in-jokes, or events that only part of the group experienced create an implicit boundary. Physical arrangement is another; seating, lighting, and room layout can place a person structurally outside a conversation without anyone intending it. Language is a third, particularly in mixed groups where fluency varies, or where subcultural vocabulary is assumed to be universal.
