The appeal is rarely musical accomplishment. Karaoke is generally understood as a social ritual in which the performance is a vehicle for something else: shared attention, mild vulnerability, and the low-stakes permission to be a little ridiculous in company.

| Understanding=A karaoke evening is organised around turn-taking. Songs are queued, either through a machine, an app, or a host who manages the list, and participants perform in sequence. This structure quietly determines much of the evening's social texture. When turns are distributed evenly, most people feel included. When a few participants dominate the queue, others may drift toward the edges of the room.
