A further point that is often overlooked: possession of someone else's belongings carries a degree of responsibility. The item is not abandoned property simply because it was left in another person's home. Holding it safely and making a reasonable attempt to return it is generally understood as the baseline expectation, and in many jurisdictions found property is also subject to legal rules.
