Finally, inclusion is often discussed in terms of participation rather than mere presence. Attending a gathering and being able to take part in it are different outcomes. A guest who cannot hear conversation over the music, or who cannot follow references shared by an established group, may be physically present and socially absent.

| Social=The social dimension of inclusion is where much of the difficulty and much of the value tends to sit. Gatherings within any community develop their own rhythms, in-jokes, and unspoken hierarchies. These are not inherently exclusionary, but they can function that way for newcomers, for people who attend less often, or for those whose circumstances differ from the majority of the group.
