Visibility is another dimension that carries particular weight in queer contexts. A picnic is public. Not everyone present may be equally out, equally comfortable being photographed, or equally relaxed about affection in view of strangers. People report that these differences are rarely discussed in advance and are often assumed away. Treating outdoor visibility as a matter on which participants may reasonably differ, rather than a settled question, avoids putting anyone in the position of having to object publicly.
