Hallways matter for emergency reasons as well. Corridors and stairwells are escape routes, and items stored in them — bicycles, boxes, furniture — can obstruct exit in a fire. Where guests are unfamiliar with a building, knowing the location of the nearest exit is a reasonable baseline awareness rather than an anxious precaution.
