Communities that draw people from varied backgrounds encounter an additional layer. A newcomer may be new to the group, new to the wider community, or new to the subject entirely, and these situations call for different amounts of context. Assuming shared knowledge that a person does not have can be quietly alienating, while over-explaining to someone experienced can read as condescending. Asking rather than assuming tends to resolve this.
