This article looks at connection as an observable social process rather than an outcome to be achieved. It is concerned with what people report about how relationships of substance tend to form, where they commonly stall, and which assumptions are associated with disappointment.

| Understanding=A meaningful connection is generally described as one where both people are known in some accurate way, where attention flows in both directions, and where the relationship survives ordinary interruptions. Intensity is not the defining feature. Community experience suggests that a strong first encounter and a durable connection are separate phenomena that are frequently confused.
