A second misunderstanding concerns alcohol itself. A cocktail evening is not, by definition, an evening of heavy drinking. Many hosts describe deliberately pacing the event — food available early, water visible throughout, no pressure to keep a glass filled. Others host versions with no alcohol at all, keeping the format and dropping the substance. The social structure is what carries the evening, not the contents of the glass.
