This matters more in queer social contexts than in many others. People attend gatherings at very different levels of openness. Some are out at work, some are not; some live in cities where visibility carries little cost, and some do not. A photograph is a permanent, portable, easily duplicated record, and it does not travel with the context in which it was taken.
