It is also worth clarifying what welcoming does not mean. It does not require a group to abandon its existing norms, nor to give a new person immediate standing equal to long-term members. Trust in most social circles is built incrementally, and the expectation that it should arrive instantly tends to create pressure rather than warmth. Welcoming is better understood as providing the conditions under which trust can develop, rather than as a shortcut past that process.
