Assumptions often contribute to misunderstandings. People naturally fill gaps in information using their own expectations, particularly when communication is brief or incomplete. Digital communication illustrates this clearly. A short message may appear friendly to one person and distant to another simply because written communication lacks tone of voice, facial expressions, and immediate clarification.
