Autonomy over one's own participation matters. Leaving a picnic should not require justification, and someone who wants to go home before the group disperses is exercising an ordinary choice. Arrangements that make departure difficult — remote locations, shared transport with no alternative, a single person holding everyone's belongings — quietly erode that freedom, usually without anyone intending it.
