The underlying principle is not complicated. A plan that has not accounted for someone's actual physical or sensory reality is not a neutral plan; it quietly excludes. Accessibility planning is simply the habit of asking about those realities early, rather than discovering them when someone is already standing outside a building they cannot enter.

| Understanding=At its centre, accessibility planning is a form of information gathering. It involves knowing enough about a location and a schedule to describe them accurately to someone else, so that person can decide for themselves whether the plan works. The decision belongs to them; the information is the host's or organiser's contribution.
