A second concept is the distinction between private space and semi-private space. An apartment interior is private. A hallway, lift, shared garden or entryway is semi-private, meaning it belongs to everyone and to no one in particular. Conduct in semi-private areas tends to carry more social weight than conduct behind a closed door, because it is witnessed and remembered by people who have no other information about the person involved.
