Guests also shape the room. A person who consistently redirects attention to themselves can flatten a gathering, not through malice but through volume. A person who withdraws entirely can leave others uncertain whether something has gone wrong. Both patterns are usually unintentional, and both are more easily addressed by adjusting one's own behaviour than by managing someone else's.
