Silence is a legitimate answer. People are entitled to end contact without explanation, and repeated attempts to obtain one are generally understood as disregarding that entitlement. Equally, a person who wishes to be clear rather than silent is entitled to say so plainly, and clarity offered without hostility is usually received better than a slow fade.
