The social character of the meetup is a second variable. Some groups exist primarily for the sport and treat the social element as incidental. Others are social groups that use sport as an organising principle, with the post-activity drink or meal understood as the real centre of the event. Neither model is superior, but arriving with the wrong expectation is a frequent cause of feeling out of place.
