Two considerations recur in community discussion. The first is the question of unknown attendees. Open invitations, or invitations that allow guests to bring others freely, mean a host may end up sharing their home with people they have never met and cannot vouch for. Some hosts are comfortable with this; others prefer to know, at minimum, who is expected. Making that preference explicit in advance avoids awkward moments at the door.
