Another point of confusion concerns scale. Larger gatherings are not simply smaller gatherings with more people. Beyond a certain number, conversation fragments into subgroups, individual attention from the host becomes impractical, and the physical arrangement of space begins to determine social patterns more strongly than intention does. Recognising which kind of gathering is being planned tends to matter more than the specific arrangements made.
