There is also a distinction between meetings in one's own city and those requiring longer travel. Local meetings tend to keep options open. Travel that involves overnight distance, booked tickets, or non-refundable arrangements changes the balance: a person who has travelled far may feel implicitly obliged to stay, and the host may feel implicitly obliged to accommodate. Neither obligation is real, but both are commonly felt.
