A common misunderstanding is that karaoke requires singing ability, or that participation is mandatory. In practice, most groups include people who never take a microphone and still consider the evening enjoyable. Listening, choosing songs for others, operating the queue, or joining a chorus are all recognised forms of participation. Treating attendance and performance as the same thing tends to create pressure that the format does not require.
