A common misunderstanding is that outdoor space is automatically less private than indoor space. In practice the opposite can also be true. Rooftops are frequently overlooked by neighbouring buildings, and sound travels differently at height than it does at street level. Conversations that feel intimate can be audible several floors down or across a courtyard. People sometimes assume that being outdoors and above the street grants a kind of anonymity, when it may in fact increase visibility.
