| Social=Food occupies an unusual social position. Offering it is a gesture of welcome, and declining it can feel like a rejection of that gesture. This asymmetry is where much of the discomfort around food safety originates. Guests frequently report accepting food or drink they did not want, or did not feel certain about, because refusing seemed rude or because they did not want to appear suspicious of their host.
