Autonomy matters. Participants can leave at any point, decline to continue, or step out of a conversation without explanation. Groups that treat early departure as normal rather than as something requiring justification tend to feel safer to attend. Where a walk crosses into isolated territory, telling someone the intended route and expected return time is a reasonable precaution regardless of who else is present.
