Tone also travels differently in text than in speech. Warmth that is obvious in person can read as flat or transactional on a screen, and enthusiasm can read as pressure. People who write invitations frequently find that a small amount of context — why they are extending it, what they imagine the occasion being like — does more for tone than adjectives do.
