There is a distinction worth drawing between a backup plan and a substitute plan. A backup preserves the character of the original meeting: an outdoor coffee becomes an indoor coffee nearby, a walk becomes a slower loop through a covered space. A substitute changes the character entirely, and a substitute proposed under time pressure can accidentally shift expectations. Moving from a public outdoor meeting to someone's apartment is not a weather adjustment; it is a different kind of meeting, and it is often discussed as something that deserves its own conversation rather than being folded into a rain decision.
