It also helps to distinguish between public-facing and private gatherings. Public formats are typically held in venues with their own rules, staff and legal responsibilities. Private gatherings — those held in homes or rented spaces by individuals — place responsibility on the host and, by extension, on the guests. The social contract is different in each case, and applying the expectations of one to the other is a frequent source of misjudgement.
