Their appeal is partly practical. A park belongs to no one in particular, which means neither person is a host and neither is a guest. There is no entry fee, no dress code, no staff, and no expectation that anything be ordered or consumed. Leaving requires no explanation. For a first meeting, that low commitment is often described as reassuring.
