A third factor is exit friction. Every venue has an implicit cost attached to leaving. Leaving a café is socially trivial. Leaving a private home, particularly late at night or in an unfamiliar district, may involve transport, weather, and a more direct conversation. Venues with low exit friction tend to make it easier for people to act on their own discomfort early rather than waiting.
