Autonomy matters here. Nobody is obliged to explain their financial limits, and "that's outside what I can do" is a complete answer. Equally, agreeing to a cost and then feeling unable to raise concerns afterwards is worth examining. Consent applies to money as it does elsewhere: it should be informed, given in advance, and revocable for future arrangements.
