Acoustics are the most consistently underestimated factor. Stairwells and entrance halls are typically hard-surfaced and vertical, which means conversation at ordinary volume can carry across several floors. Doors that close under spring tension, intercom buzzers, and footsteps on stone all register differently at night than during the day.
