Consent at a dinner gathering operates in a quieter register than at more explicitly framed events, but it is present. Guests decide how much of themselves to share, whether to stay, and what topics they will engage. A host's authority over the evening does not extend to a guest's participation in it. Recognising when someone is deflecting a subject, and letting the deflection stand, is part of hosting well.
