Expectations also change. What was agreed in a message thread three days earlier may no longer reflect how either person feels. Treating an earlier statement as provisional rather than binding is generally described as healthier than treating it as a contract, and revisiting it briefly before or during a meeting is common practice.

They are formed by prior experience, by the norms of a particular community or venue, and by assumptions about what a certain kind of invitation usually means. Two people can use identical words and mean quite different things because their reference points differ.
