There is also an emotional asymmetry that many people notice. The person who states an expectation often feels exposed, as though naming a preference risks rejection or seems presumptuous. The person receiving it usually experiences it as helpful. This gap between anticipated and actual reception is one reason expectation-setting is avoided more often than it needs to be.
