The method of return also carries social meaning. Meeting in person to hand something over implies a longer interaction. Leaving an item with a neighbour, posting it, or arranging a brief doorstep handover keeps the contact minimal. Neither approach is better; they simply communicate different things, and choosing consciously avoids sending a signal that was not intended.
