There is a common assumption that thanks belongs only to the guest, directed upward toward the host. In practice the exchange runs in both directions. Guests may thank a host for opening a private space; hosts may thank guests for showing up, contributing to the atmosphere, and treating the home with care. Neither cancels the other out.
