Shared-contribution formats are widely used. These may involve guests bringing food or drink, splitting a defined cost, or rotating hosting duties across a group. Each arrangement carries its own social texture, and the arrangement that works well in one circle may not translate to another.

Within any group of adults there is likely to be a wide range of financial circumstances, some of it visible and much of it not. A gathering that assumes a particular level of disposable income can quietly exclude people who would otherwise be present, and those people often decline without stating the reason.
