In group settings, attention behaves like a limited resource. It tends to gather around the people who are already confident, already known, or already speaking. Without deliberate counterbalance, a group can drift into a shape where two or three participants hold the conversation and the remainder become spectators. This drift is usually unintentional. It is also usually visible to the people it affects.
