Groups tend to develop a centre of gravity within the first half hour. Once established, that centre is difficult to move. This is why attention paid early — a name repeated, a question directed outward, a conversation topic chosen for its accessibility rather than its depth — tends to have disproportionate effect. Later corrections are possible but require more effort, and are more visible.
