Several patterns are widely described in social research and in ordinary community experience. Roles tend to emerge within minutes: someone becomes the organiser, someone the connector, someone the quieter observer. These roles are usually unspoken and often inconsistent with how the same people behave elsewhere. A person who is talkative in one group may be reserved in another, depending on who else is present.
