Groups also generate a shared sense of what is acceptable. This is sometimes called a group norm, and it forms faster than most participants realise. Once established, it can be difficult for an individual to signal discomfort, because doing so appears to interrupt something the rest of the group seems to be enjoying. Understanding this is central to understanding why group settings can feel harder to leave than one-to-one meetings.
