It can help to distinguish between three things that are frequently confused. A disagreement is a difference of opinion or preference. A conflict is a disagreement that has acquired emotional weight. A rupture is a conflict that has damaged the relationship itself. Most disagreements never need to become conflicts, and most conflicts do not need to become ruptures. The transitions between these states are usually driven by how people respond, not by the original subject.
