Another common misunderstanding concerns the goal. Resolving conflict is often imagined as reaching agreement. In many cases agreement is not available, and the more realistic outcome is mutual understanding: both people grasp the other's position clearly enough that the difference stops being threatening. Groups that can hold unresolved differences without hostility tend to be more durable than groups that require consensus.
