Historically, hookup culture among gay men developed partly in response to social and legal restrictions that limited open relationships. In many countries during the twentieth century, same-sex relationships were stigmatized or criminalized. Casual encounters sometimes provided one of the few ways for individuals to explore attraction and intimacy.
