Hosts occupy a particular position. They carry responsibility for atmosphere and for the wellbeing of people in their space, and this labour is frequently invisible. Community perspectives increasingly recognise hosting as a contribution in its own right, and the health of a local scene often depends on a small number of people willing to do it repeatedly.

| Safety=Safety at gatherings is primarily a matter of clarity and autonomy rather than of procedure. Attendees benefit from knowing in advance what kind of event they are entering: its general character, who else may be present, whether it is in a private home or a venue, and what is and is not expected of guests. Ambiguity on these points is where most difficulties originate.
