Belongings frequently contain private material. Phones, notebooks, medication, documents, and bags can reveal a great deal about their owner. The widely shared expectation is that a found item is held without being examined beyond what is necessary to identify the owner. Where an item is clearly personal or sensitive, discretion about having found it at all is generally considered part of respecting the person.
