Autonomy matters here. Nobody should feel obliged to attend a gathering they cannot comfortably afford, and nobody should feel pressured into hosting at a scale beyond their means. A declined invitation on financial grounds deserves to be received without probing or persuasion. Equally, a host who decides to keep an event smaller or simpler than expected is exercising a legitimate boundary rather than failing an obligation.
